CBOT futures closed mostly higher with soybean oil lifting soybeans higher despite weaker soybean meal futures. May Corn set a new contract high close at $7.835 – the highest close for a nearby corn contract (continuous) since September 2012. The all-time high trade for the nearby contract is $8.4375 set in August 2012. December Corn made another contract high. Support for corn remains those factors listed yesterday with a boost by sharply higher energy futures again today. The extended wheat rally took another step higher today on production concerns in the U.S. and the Black Sea region.
Cattle futures closed higher, supported by this week’s firmer cash fed market and renewed speculative interest. Choice beef fell 1.11 to 272.36 and Select lost 1.34 to 259.37. Beef movement of 149 loads was very strong. Limited cash trade was reported by USDA at a steady $139/cwt live and dressed mostly at $226/cwt, up $1 from Tuesday (a few at $231/cwt).
Lean hog futures closed mostly lower, correcting some of Tuesday’s big gains. The April LH contract edged higher on stronger pork values and ahead of its expiration tomorrow. FOB Plant Pork ended only 1.73 higher at 108.53 after being up 5.28 in the morning report. Belly value went from up 22 to just 7.5 higher. Pork movement of 256 loads was near the bottom of the past week’s range.
