The closure of government agencies is creating uncertainty for farmers in Kentucky and around the country. The current shutdown prohibits farmers from securing needed loans, disaster and trade assistance, and will delay the implementation of the recently passed farm bill. Kentucky Farm Bureau is watching this issue closely, making sure the needs of farmers are understood in Washington. CBOT futures traded higher Monday evening and overnight, but the good times ended as traders woke up this morning.  Selling in corn and soybeans continued right into the final minutes, putting the settlement prices at/near the day’s lows. Cattle futures closed narrowly mixed, except for the strong gains in Feb and Apr Live Cattle, both of which moved to new contract highs.

After rallying for the first hour of trading (830 am opening), corn and soybean futures sold off through midday. This resulted in mostly lower closing prices which were at/near the day’s lows.  Except for the February and April LC contracts, LC and FC futures closed lower with the nearby FC taking the biggest hit. Lean Hog futures closed moderately lower although the pork cutout was up over $2.00 in the morning. 

Kentucky Farm Bureau took home several organizational awards presented at this year’s American Farm Bureau Federation’s (AFBF) Centennial Convention.  Each year state Farm Bureaus are presented awards in different categories related to several programs and initiatives.

In front of a celebratory gathering of approximately 7,000 farmers and ranchers from across the nation, American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall opened AFBF’s 100th Annual Convention by outlining a few of the organization’s many historic accomplishments – from leading the way on the nation’s first farm bill in the 1930s to helping develop the Food for Peace Program in the 1950s. 

Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) is proud to announce that Congressman James Comer of Kentucky’s First District has been named Outstanding New Member of Congress by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

KFB nominated Congressman Comer for the award because of his commitment to agriculture and rural life in Kentucky and across America.

Twenty-four county Farm Bureaus nationwide are being honored by the American Farm Bureau Federation for innovative program ideas in the organization’s County Activities of Excellence Awards program. The winners are being highlighted during AFBF’s 100th Annual Convention.

Corn, beans and wheat closed 1-2 pct lower and near the day’s lows. Futures were pressured by a lack of details/confirmation on China’s plan to purchase U.S. commodities.  Cattle futures closed mixed in narrow price ranges. There was a lack of cash trade with the packer bids and feedlot offers far apart.  Lean Hog futures also closed mixed with the nearby contracts higher.
