Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles was among those sharing the story of agriculture at the Kentucky State Fair. Quarles, who served country ham during the commodity breakfast on the opening day, says it is always a great opportunity to educate people about agriculture. Quarles also discussed crops and the need to be on the lookout for farm equipment on the roadway.

Under Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey was in Kentucky Wednesday, August 15, as the special guest of First District Congressman James Comer. Under Secretary Northey discussed the impact of corn ethanol and E-85, how the industry is affecting agriculture, the future of renewable fuels and some of the challenges facing ethanol.

For the 19th time Broadbent B & B Foods in Kuttawa had the Grand Champion Country Ham at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville. Owner Ronnie Drennan and host Alan Watts discuss the ham, the other classes won by Broadbent B & B Foods and a family win that left Drennan with some extra pride at the state fair.

County Farm Bureau organizations are constantly giving back to their communities in a number of ways. One of those is through a grant program established this year in Trigg County. President Alana Baker Dunn and County Emergency Management Director David Bryant discuss the recent purchase of three grain rescue tubes, how they will be used and the importance of having them as a resource in an emergency.

CBOT futures closed lower and near the day’s lows, pressured by large yield estimates from a private crop tour and a lack of friendly market news. Cattle futures closed narrowly mixed and generally mid-range. Recent strength in boxed beef values is supporting Live Cattle.

CBOT futures closed mostly steady, but wheat futures crashed. Corn and soybean futures were pressured by weekend rainfall. Cattle futures closed mostly lower despite a second straight day of stronger boxed beef values. Lean Hog futures closed lower with the nearby October down a large 2.12/cwt, the result of profit-taking.

Mr. Drew Graham was appointed as Executive Vice President for the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation effective October 1. In his new role, working in collaboration with the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, Drew will provide leadership and direction in all Federation operations, financial resources, and programs and services that directly benefit Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation.
