A feature report with Meade County farmer Nicholas Hardesty, who with wife and farm partner, Bethany, have been named one of the three finalists in Farm Bureau’s Outstanding Young Farm Family contest.  Nicholas says they grow the typical Kentucky farm crops but with their installation of several greenhouses have enhanced their farming operation through the production of tobacco transplants and poinsettias. The contest winner will be announced next week at Farm Bureau’s annual meeting in Louisville.

Corn and soybean futures closed lower, while wheat markets were mixed. Pressure originated from yesterday’s bearish action in soybean futures with key chart support levels being broken. Improved weather in South America was also cited. Cattle futures opened near steady but quickly headed lower and then closed down sharply and near the day’s lows.

CBOT futures closed lower with the soy complex leading the market down. Soybeans ended down 12-13 cents and at the day’s lows. Soybeans were pressured by beneficial rainfall in South America and technical selling as important chart support failed – October lows and the 200-day moving averages.   After a roller-coaster day in prices, cattle futures closed little changed but on the negative side.
