Corn and soybean futures closed slightly lower and at/near the day’s lows due to a sell-off in the final minutes of trading. Markets were pressured in part by the widening basis and unexpectedly low cash prices in markets dependent upon river transportation.

Corn and soybean futures posted minimal changes but futures closed off the day’s lows.  Cattle futures traded higher through mid-morning, but then weakened the rest of the day and closed mostly lower and at/near the day’s lows.  Lean Hog futures followed Tuesday’s price pattern where the nearby October LH contract closed higher while most deferred futures closed slightly lower.

A feature report on a true Kentucky tradition; the “conservation writing and art” contests, one of which, has been underway here since the 1940’s.  Comments from Johnna McHugh, the assistant director of the state division of conservation, who says this year’s theme is “water is life.”  The initial contest entry deadline is December 1.

The Kentucky Ag Department’s Rinse and Return program to collect and recycle used, plastic chemical containers continues to evolve.  Feldhaus visits with KDA’s David Wayne who says they’re now heading into their “haul out” phase. He talks about the success and growth of the program as it has evolved since its inception in 1991.

The Devine Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Mercer County is celebrating its 10^th anniversary.  This roadside market which features corn and tomatoes in the summer, really kicks into high gear for the fall harvest season with hay rides, zip lines, and “paint ball” activities.  Jason Devine says last season the popular destination attracted over 40,000 visitors.

A report on the Lyon County school system’s successful application for an ag development grant with which to construct an educational greenhouse for use by the local high school and FFA group.  Local ag teacher and FFA advisor, Mercedes Smith, talks about their plans for the facility which should be in operation by next spring.
