The second of three Woodland Owner Shortcourses is on tap for Saturday, August 26 in Warren County.  UK forester, Billy Thomas one of the event coordinators, says it offers information and contacts for woodland owners to take small steps to improve the quality and sustainability of their wooded acreages.

A feature story with Susan Turner, Monroe County Extension Agent, who says the county has been approved for over $56,000 in county ag development funds to install a certified test kitchen.  That’ll be housed in their new extension office which should be completed by this October.  She explains the economic development potential this will hold for local farmers.

State Ag Commissioner Ryan Quarles provides revenue details from the department’s “Ag Tag” program that generated over $600,000 in farmer donations, a 14% increase over 2016.  He notes this program shares that revenue among FFA, and 4-H with half of their funding going back to local chapters and clubs.

A preview report on the Kentucky State Fair (Aug 17-27), which this year will relocate the midway to right in front of Freedom Hall, will feature deep fried “mac ‘n cheese bacon balls, and will have a display recognizing the 100th anniversary of World War I.  State fair spokesperson, Amanda Storment also provides information on how to order tickets early and get about half off.

CBOT futures closed mixed with minimal changes as weather outlooks are stable and traders prepare for Thursday’s USDA WASDE and crop production estimates.   Cattle futures closed slightly lower after trading both sides on only light cash cattle trading.

CBOT futures closed lower with soybeans dropping sharply on continued improved weather forecasts.   Cattle futures closed higher, extending the gains posted on Wednesday. This week’s better-than-expected cash price of $116-117 has supported futures.    Lean Hog futures closed mixed with small price changes.
