The Kentucky Center for Ag and Rural Development, KCARD, has two workshops coming up at the end of the month in Warren and Clay Counties. The center’s Aaron Shapiro discusses the Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) program which can help with funding for ag entrepreneurs to take the next step in developing their agribusinesses.

Feldhaus visits with Preston Correll, a partner in Marksbury Farm Foods, a specialty livestock processing facility in Garrard County. Correll talks about a recent ag development grant that will allow them to increase their capacity for poultry processing. The company has also opened a restaurant in Lexington which is expanding the market for their poultry products.

An update on the beginning farmer loans available through the Ky Ag Finance Corporation.  Assistant Executive Director, Bill McCloskey, says the program works with local lenders providing low interested money that is making it possible for younger farmers to take their operations to the next level.

A feature report about the Eastern Kentucky hay contest conducted through UK’s Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability in Breathitt County.  Tom Keene, UK agronomy specialist, says the competition highlights the value of hay testing to better balance winter cattle feeding rations, which ultimately improves the farmer’s bottom line.

CBOT futures closed near steady to a few cents lower in narrow-range trading ahead of tomorrow’s USDA crop reports.  Cattle futures closed narrowly mixed on a lack of cash trade in the feedlot.  Lean Hog futures closed higher with bigger gains coming in the nearer contracts.

CBOT futures closed little changed today after trading both higher and lower given a slower-than-normal harvest pace and plentiful global supplies.  Cattle futures closed higher with Live Cattle performing better than Feeder Cattle futures. Cattle rallied until noon CT and then profit-taking kicked in.
