Kentucky Boys and Girls Clubs boost garden and cooking programs with 'Ag Tag' grant

Several hundred Kentucky youth will learn hands-on gardening and cooking skills this summer thanks to a Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) “Ag Tag” program grant awarded to nine clubs in the Kentucky Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs.

4-H to host Solar Eclipse Camp for historic event

The West Kentucky 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs is in the direct path of a total solar eclipse that will occur Aug. 21. Kentucky 4-H is taking this rare opportunity to host a Solar Eclipse Camp there so young people cannot only view the historical event but learn the science behind it.

The Henderson County fair board has received and ag development grant for a major expansion of their livestock pavilion.  Board president, Valerie Gentry, is featured talking about the popularity of youth livestock programs in the community, their impact on participating youngsters, and the time frame for the new addition.

A new poultry education center is on the drawing board for Davies County. Poultry farmer, Daniel Hayden of Philpot, says it will consist of a new building on his farm to explain their operation, and it will feature a “glassed-in” viewing area in one of his poultry houses so visitors can see first hand the day-to-day activities.

Kentucky’s new “Food Immunity Bill” has become law and now gone into effect, and Tamara Sandberg with the Kentucky Association of Food Banks says the measure will go far in freeing up more food donations for hungry Kentuckians.  The measure provides legal protection for retailers and farmers who make donations of food available.

A suggested standard change set forth by the Food and Drug Administration would set new N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) levels in finished smokeless tobacco products; the possible change has many dark tobacco producers, in particular dark fire-cured tobacco producers, worried about the future of their crop.
