A feature report with Ben Furnish of Harrison County, who along with wife, Katie, have been selected as one of the top three finalists in the state’s outstanding young farm family contest.  Furnish feels a couple reasons for their selection include their steady growth over the last ten years and on their attention to record keeping. The couple now operates on 1,437 acres in Harrison and Bourbon Counties.

Farm Bill safety net payments have already been made to Kentucky farmers as a result of depressed prices with the 2015 crop yields.  Currently, selected Kentucky farmers are being surveyed about crop yields for the 2016 crops, and says Dave Knopf with the National Ag Statistics Service, future safety net payments will depend on a strong survey return leading to accurate yield averages.

From tax issues to tweaks in the upcoming farm bill, Kentucky farmers will be debating some of those issues at the Farm Bureau resolutions committee meeting in Louisville this week. Farm group vice president, Eddie Melton, discusses some of the more popular resolutions submitted, as the committee prepares its report for final delegate action at the organization’s annual meeting, Nov 30 – Dec 3 in Louisville.

A preview report on the North American International Livestock Exposition opening today in Louisville, running through October 17. The Ky Ag Department’s John Chism is superintendent for the exposition’s beef show and talks about some of the feedback he gets from exhibitors and from Kentucky farmers who come in to check out animal genetics.

Kentucky food prices for the third quarter of 2016 are down slightly from the July Marketbasket Food Price Survey.  Feldhaus visits with survey coordinator, Farm Bureau’s Todd Bright, on some of the trends in item prices at check-out and discusses some of the factors having impact on them.

CBOT futures closed strongly higher led by the soybean meal and soybean markets. November Soybeans broke above $10.00, creating additional buying into the closing bell.  Cattle futures closed moderately higher after trading both sides of unchanged. Lean Hog futures closed lower after testing clearly-defined resistance levels on the charts.

Fall is the time of year in which many festival-type events are held, mostly in honor of food. The Browning Orchard Festival is no different but along with it being a celebration of the foods that are grown there, it is also a classroom for the agriculture programs at Morehead State University.

CBOT futures closed little changed after trading both sides.  Corn and soybean futures had many contracts posting “inside days” as price ranges were smaller than Monday’s.  Cattle futures moved higher in the morning in follow-through buying from Monday’s market. However about Noon CT, profit-taking kicked in and turned the screens from green to red.

CBOT futures closed strongly mixed with sharp gains in soybean oil futures lifting soybean futures, while corn and wheat posted 1-3 percent losses.  Cattle futures closed strongly higher, making for 3 straight days of big gains in futures. The markets actually gapped higher at the opening bell which is a positive chart signal.
