CBOT futures closed lower but off the day’s lows. Markets were pressured by less threatening weather forecasts and technical selling, including funds liquidating some long positions – especially in soybeans, meal and soyoil.

The UK Division of Forestry and Forestry Extension have joined forces combining their web sites into one unit. In view of the fact that over half of the state’s acreage is covered in woodlands, the on line location could be of great benefit to a good number of visitors. Feldhaus visits with UK Forestry Extension’s Renee Williams on how the new site can benefit a variety of interests.

The Rinse and Return program at the Ky Ag Department has been underway for years, but it’s taken on a new focus. KDA’s Environmental Services Director, David Wayne, talks about their target of the small plastic containers utilized by lawn services and smaller farms. He says their recycling service is free and they even provide local pick-ups.

A “June Dairy Month” feature on the new, high tech dairy barn just put into service at UK’s Coldstream Research farm. Mercer County native, Brittany Core, serves as research coordinator at Coldstream and she says the dairy cows love their new home. She describes the facility which has not stall and a 12-inch layer of sawdust as bedding for the cows. There are also automatic water misters in hot weather and to increase cow comfort.

A follow-up report on Kentucky’s very popular county fair season which cumulatively draws over one million visitors. These mostly, all-volunteer efforts are a real boost to local economies, and some over the years have grown into events that may draw 30,000 to 40,000 attendees. The Ky Ag Department’s Chris Caudill comments.

CBOT futures closed sharply lower and at/near the day’s lows. Futures traded higher overnight; however, when trading reopened at 830 am, futures headed lower and trended down into the closing bell. After a one-day reprieve yesterday, cattle futures resumed the sell-off on long-liquidation and technical selling.

CBOT futures closed mixed. Corn continues to be supported by fund buying based on hot/dry forecasts. Soybean futures closed mid-range; soybeans are not threatened as much as corn by short-term weather issues. Cattle futures closed higher after trading much lower in early morning trading. Lean Hog futures soared today after the June LH contract expired at Noon.

CBOT futures closed mixed in a volatile trading session. Futures moved higher Sunday evening when markets opened due to weather concerns. However, prices turned lower during the morning trade. Cattle futures closed limit down on heavy liquidation by the longs as they lose confidence that beef demand will support cash prices.
