A follow-up report today with Rebecca Woods, coordinator of the Kentucky Regional Food Processing Center in Jackson County, where they’re hosting an open house next Tuesday, May 24. Woods says a special guest will be a Madison County farmer who’s use he center’s facilities to process and package a new food product that they are now selling at Kroger stores.

The transition from beef cattle production to growing strawberries is a major learning curve for John Williams, but in the last two years that sweet crop is one of his main consumer draws at his Mason County roadside market, “The Garden on 68.” Williams has joined and is a big fan of Farm Bureau’s “certified” market program.

CBOT futures closed slightly lower as yesterday’s USDA Report-based bullish enthusiasm waned and some profit-taking kicked in. Cattle futures closed lower after trading higher most of the morning.  Lean Hog futures closed sharply higher except for the expiring May LH contract (which is already at a premium to cash hog price).

Soybean and meal futures soared today following release of a bullish WASDE report at midday. Corn ending stocks estimates came in smaller than the trade expected, so corn futures also found strong buying interest.  Cattle futures closed little changed after Monday’s huge rally.

CBOT futures closed sharply lower on traders prepare for Tuesday’s crop production (wheat) and Supply-Demand updates. Cattle futures soared today following last week’s strong technical action after Live Cattle futures charted a double-bottom in late April. ?

CBOT futures closed lower led by soybeans and meal as the spec funds were heavy sellers. A stronger US Dollar and crude oil futures losing the early gains weighed on the market. Planting weather continues to be favorable.

Cattle futures closed sharply higher on short-covering and weaker CBOT futures. June Live Cattle futures discount to the cash cattle prices has been supportive. Choice beef down 0.32 at 204.42; Select down 0.15 at 195.50.

Lean Hog futures closed slightly higher today with a narrower trading range within the limits of yesterday’s trading range. FOB Plant Pork gained .66 to 83.12 on an 8% gain in belly value.

Becky Naugle heads up the Ky Small Business Development Center (KSMDC.org) and says the business they’re trying to develop includes agriculture ventures of all sizes. One of their programs helps local agri-businesses “find a pin” on the Google search map. They’ve also just recently recognized a Davies County roadside market for its success and growth as it adds to the local economy.

Adair County extension agent Nick Roy and a local cattle farmer did an experiment in wintertime bale feeding last season.  The process requires a little more management but can also reduce tractor fuel use and improve soils where cattle are fed. Roy says the process holds promise, even for smaller producers and can be checked out at any local extension office.
