On a colder than normal April afternoon, Morgan Askins is unloading her two quarter horses at the Shelby County Fairgrounds as she prepares to be the flag bearer for the weekend’s Kentuckiana Ranch Horse Association (KRHA) event. She gets her horses settled and prepares for the next day’s activities.

As another session of the Kentucky General Assembly has come to a close, it is time to reflect on the legislation that passed that benefits our farm families and rural communities. It's also a good time to look at bills that did not pass.

I will be the first to admit that through the years I have lost touch with friends, and even family, for one reason or another. Often was the case that we lived far apart from each other and losing touch just happened, I suppose.

The lush, quiet countryside of Green County is about to get a little busier as planting season gets underway. The sound of tractors and planters gives way only to the many voices on the farm, several of which belong to the guest workers who have become a familiar part of the farming landscape there, and on most farms across the state.

It certainly wasn’t the best weather to get the growing season off to a stellar start, but patient producers have weathered these situations before and are once again looking for a good crop year and praying for a great one.  

The days of tobacco being the king crop in Kentucky are in the rear-view mirror, but the once top crop still holds a place in Kentucky's diverse agricultural environment.

While the majestic horse farms of Central Kentucky are the most visible symbol of the state’s storied equine industry, these and all the other horse farms throughout the Commonwealth are real-deal working farms no matter what breed resides on each.
