CBOT futures soared higher again today as the Russian-Ukraine war intensifies and many countries and companies distance themselves from doing business with Russia. Live cattle closed mixed and feeder cattle ended moderately lower as CBOT futures soared again today. Lean hog futures closed strongly higher, ending a 4-day decline.

Grain and oilseed futures closed sharply higher as the Russia-Ukraine war intensifies along with Putin’s mention of nuclear weapons. Except for the expiring February LC contract’s gain, cattle futures closed lower with feeder cattle getting hit hard by the sharp gains at the CBOT. Lean hog futures closed lower for the fourth straight day, although losses were minimal.

CBOT futures closed sharply higher with corn, soybeans, KC wheat and Chicago wheat making new contract highs. Cattle futures closed lower and near the day’s lows following a late day sell-off as equity markets fell and grain prices rallied. Lean hog futures closed sharply lower after setting some new contract highs soon after the market opened this morning.

The tornadoes that swept through the state late December 10 and the early morning hours of the next day will never be forgotten, especially by those in the hardest-hit areas. The community of Bremen in, Muhlenberg County was one of those.
