The Art of Blacksmithing:  Bringing the Past into the Present and Future

The look, smell, and sounds of a blacksmith shop are unmistakable, and very much the same today as they were centuries ago. So it may come as a surprise to see someone as young as Jonathan Pinkston, a student at the University of Kentucky, hammering away on an anvil, creating a multitude of tools in much the same way as blacksmiths have done for generations.

Following the midday USDA WASDE report, CBOT futures closed from slightly higher to strongly lower, as in the wheat market. Cattle futures closed lower except for the January feeder contract. Lean hog futures closed sharply higher on short-covering after LH had dropped $4-6/cwt the past four trading days.

Again today, the CBOT closed mixed with soybeans reversing yesterday’s losses to lead the market to the upside. Cattle futures closed lower and near the day’s lows. Further declines in boxed beef values and a lack of cash fed trade weighed on the market. Lean hog futures closed lower with the nearby December LH contract outpacing the 2022 contracts.

CBOT futures closed mixed with soybean oil leading the losses and MGE wheat the top gainer. Cattle futures closed lower with live cattle trading narrow ranges with minimal losses. Beyond the nearby December LH contract, lean hog futures closed sharply lower.

Grain and soy futures closed mixed but mostly well of the day’s lows, especially in corn and wheat contracts. Cattle futures closed moderately higher and near the day’s highs. Lean hog futures closed sharply lower and at the bottom of the trading range.

Pulaski County farmer Mark Haney was re-elected Kentucky Farm Bureau President on the concluding day of the organization’s 102nd annual meeting. Also re-elected were Webster County’s Eddie Melton as First Vice President and Sharon Furches of Calloway County as Second Vice President.
