CBOT futures closed sharply higher led by old-crop corn futures. Cattle futures closed sharply lower with feeders magnifying the loss in LC due to corn’s huge rally. In contrast to cattle, the lean hog market closed higher across the board with summer contracts leading the way.

As campaigns to promote May as National Beef Month begin to roll out across the nation, it goes without saying that the Kentucky beef cattle industry has become one of the best in the country. The Commonwealth has the largest beef cow herd east of the Mississippi and the eighth largest nationally, with approximately one million beef cows.

Gov. Andy Beshear announced today that Kentucky and other states have been advised by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that full enforcement of the REAL ID Act is being extended by 19 months.

CBOT futures closed widely mixed in very wide trading ranges as the highs were set soon after the opening bell Sunday evening. Cattle futures closed mixed with the nearby June LC down the most, pressured by ideas the cash fed market will stay under pressure from plentiful supplies. Lean hog futures closed higher with huge gains in the J/J/A contracts which gapped higher on the open.
